Wednesday, October 23, we go to the Gettysburg Visitor Center to see the Cyclorama about Pickett's charge, created in the 1880s, the museum and the bookstore. The cyclorama is amazing.
Next stop is Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, where abolitionist John Brown led a raid. He was caught and hanged.
Little boys are playing guns using long sticks. It is a supervised activity.
We walk up to the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Jefferson called it the most beautiful spot in the world. It is beautiful, but remember he never saw the western United States.
The river on the left is the Potomac; on the right is the Shenandoah.
Meriwether Lewis bought the guns for the Expedition in Harper's Ferry.
After lunch at the Dish in Charlestowne, West Virginia,we drive through the Shenandoah Valley to the Thornton Gap entrance to the Shenandoah National Park and stay at the Big Meadows Lodge. We stop in the gift shop, then join .two other couples from Big Bear and Corona del Mar in the Taproom downstairs in the Lodge, then upstairs for dinner. A fun evening! Our room is on the second floor of a separate building, a brisk walk from the lodge.
The leaves are turning, many trees are various shades of yellow and gold, a few are red and some are still green. It is a perfect time of year to visit this area.
We are so fortunate to be on this trip. Stu's last trip had 11 people, mostly from the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It rained the first week, all the parks were closed because of the government shutdown and everything in our trip up to this point, they could not do. Tauck did not cancel because the clients had traveled so far to see our country, but Stu said it was a challenge!
